FAQs
About homeopathy
Homeopathy is a system of medicine that treats the whole person. A brilliant German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, devised it nearly two hundred years ago after becoming disenchanted with the medical practices of the time; these were often ineffectual, brutal and did not treat the individual.
The word ‘homeopathy’ comes from the Greek: hómoios (ὅμοιος) 'like' and páthos (πάθος) 'suffering' - together meaning 'same suffering'. A homeopathic remedy is one that produces and works with the same symptoms the patient has be it mental, emotional or physical. Homeopathy recognises that our body is not divided into physical, mental or emotional states: they are all interconnected, each affecting the other. A basic principle of homeopathy is ‘like cures like’ - the homeopathic remedy can stimulate the body to gently heal itself, allowing our body’s innate intelligence to achieve homeostatic balance.
A homeopath will treat the individual and not the disease; a prescribed remedy will therefore be just that, individual, for the patient. No two patients will be prescribed the same remedy for the same named disease, i.e. asthma.
The ancient Greek physician Hippocrates (460-377BC), generally considered to be the 'father' of medicine, said: 'It is more important to know what sort of person has a disease than to know what sort of disease a person has'.
What can homeopathy treat?
Homeopathy can be used to treat a wide range of health (mental, physical and emotional) conditions, as the remedy prescribed is as individual to the need as the patient. As homeopathic treatment mirrors the issue - 'like for like' - it treats the person rather than the problem. Homeopathic medicines are perfectly safe to use for everyone of all ages, with no toxic side-effects, and can be used to treat acute conditions such as coughs and colds, and chronic long term health issues such as asthma, eczema, IBS and migraines.
What will I have to tell you?
This varies - generally, I will need to know about the main health issue and how it affects you as an individual. I will also ask more detailed questions, but only as much as you feel comfortable to answer. For your first consultation please complete a short questionnaire (as much as you can) - available here, this can be emailed or given directly to me. Usually, less information will be needed on follow up consultations. This information will aid my individualised prescription.
How long does treatment take?
Treatment length will vary. There are many factors to be taken into consideration when prescribing a remedy, but I generally allow 2-3 appointments before re-evaluating the treatment. Homeopathy is very cost-effective as it promotes self-healing within the body.
What if I am already taking prescribed medication?
Contrary to many misconceptions, it is highly recommended that you stay on your prescribed medication while taking homeopathy, but it is important that you let me know what medication you are taking. If you wish to withdraw from your medication, you should consult your doctor before doing so. To ensure fully integrated healthcare is maintained, all patients are encouraged to continue visiting their doctor between appointments.

Is homeopathy covered by health insurance?
There are a wide range of private health insurance companies who offer some kind of cover for homeopathic treatment but often specify that the homeopath must be registered with specific professional associations – I am a fully insured member of the Alliance of Registered Homeopaths (MARH). You will need to check with your insurance provider whether they cover homeopathy, as some do and some don't.
Is there any published research on the efficacy of homeopathy?
There is a growing body of published research in good quality peer-reviewed journals showing that homeopathy has a positive effect. Click here for more information on homeopathic research.
All information given is strictly confidential and I adhere to the Alliance of Registered Homeopaths Code of Ethics.
